Not a healthy start, but a start.

Since I had time blocked off tonight anyway which was SUPPOSED to have been spent watching Elvis Costello perform (the show was cancelled...grrrrr) I met a girlfriend for dinner.  We started out at "Comfort" on Broad Street.  It's supposed to "downhome/comfort" food, hence the name.  The waitress tried to sit us a two-top table against a wall.  I asked if we could sit somewhere else since sitting in the corner made me feel like I was being punished.  Mind you, there was an entire row of tables.  She moved us up one table and actually said (referring to the original table), "that's actually a pretty good table."  Whatever.  Strike one.  We looked at the menus and were astounded by the prices.  Not in a good way.  $17 for a meatloaf dinner just ain't happenin' in my world.  And that was the inexpensive dinner.  Strike two.  Didn't need a strike three.  We were outta there.

Went across the street to Popkin Tavern.  Richmond natives will remember the building as the old Popkin Furniture warehouse.  It's been made into a pretty decent restaurant with a nice bar.  And best of all HAPPY HOUR specials!  Three bucks for a glass of chardonnay.  That's more LIKE it!  Two dollar appetizers.  Right on!  We ordered "Popkin Tots" which were really just tater tots with some shredded asiago cheese on top and some slightly spicy Russian-dressing on the side.  But hey, two buck and who doesn't like tater tots?!  But how good would they have been with the asiago cheese MELTED over them...  And oh-there were enough tots on that plate for four people. Egads and little fishes!  What they lacked in fanciness, they more than made up for in quantity.

Dinner was an eleven dollar streak, pear, roasted pecan, and bleu salad.  When it came to the table it occurred to me that it'd probably be better if it actually had steak on it.  Duh.  The problem was promptly resolved.  No room to consider dessert.  So I got out of there with all that an the tip for $25.  I deem it "worthy" and I'd recommend it to a friend.  Boy do I fell full
